Just Stop Oil protest at Duke of Westminster’s wedding was ‘unacceptable security lapse’

Cheshire police commissioner to be asked how the stunt was allowed to happen

Just Stop Oil’s protest at the Duke and Duchess of Westminster’s wedding was an unacceptable security lapse, a policing panel has said.
The activists, an NHS nurse and a care worker, sprayed orange powder over the waiting crowds with an adapted fire extinguisher as Hugh Grosvenor, 33, and Olivia Henson, 31 left Chester Cathedral as husband and wife
The Prince of Wales is said to have witnessed the commotion as he – along with the rest of the bride and groom’s parties – saw the couple off from the “society wedding of the year” on June 7.
The pair were arrested after allegedly calmly waiting in position for hours and are said to have hidden their extinguishers in a shopping trolley.
Dan Price, the elected Police Commissioner for Cheshire, will be asked to explain how the protest was allowed to happen at a meeting on Friday.
The Cheshire Police and Crime Panel will also ask for the “full cost to the constabulary of policing the event” and if the Grosvenor family “were approached and asked to make a contribution to the cost”.
The question adds: “Has there been an acceptance that this situation was an unacceptable security lapse which could have resulted in a much worse and more dangerous outcome for the police officers who bravely responded to the incident, the wedding guests and to the wider public who were in the vicinity?
“Further what action has been taken against the perpetrators? Was the substance that was expelled sampled for potential contamination due to the introduction of toxic or biological substances?”
The activists, named as Polly, 73 and Sheila, 69, were booed by crowds as they were quickly dragged away by police.
The Duke and his new wife led the way back to the family’s 11,000-acre Eaton Estate, near the village of Eccleston, where celebrations continued late into the night.
Guests were treated to a display of fireworks that could be seen from Chester city centre, almost five miles awaym as the evening progressed.
The Duke, known to his friends as Hughie, inherited his title on the death of his father, Gerald, in 2016, and with it control of a fortune worth an estimated £10 billion.
Since their engagement was announced last April, the couple have been at pains to insist that the Chester community, where they will put down roots, would be at the heart of their celebration, funding the distribution of free ice creams and donating the wedding flowers to local charities.
The Duchess of Westminster, who grew up in London and Oxfordshire, has worked in the sustainable food and drinks industry, most recently at Belazu, an artisanal food company.
